Twitter has been abuzz with news from Gaza and Israel for much of the past week, where conflicts have recently escalated between Hamas and the Israel Defense Forces.
On Nov. 14, the IDF launched Operation Pillar of Defense when it killed the military chief of Hamas' Gaza operations, Ahmed Jabari. The attack was in part a response to the onslaught of rockets fired from Gaza into southern Israel. The IDF has continued its airstrikes in Gaza, and many speculate a ground invasion could come at any point. Hamas has continued to fire rockets into Israel, and is targeting the country's two largest cities, Tel Aviv and Jerusalem, for the first time.

Journalists and civilians living in both Gaza and Israel have been rapidly sharing updates on social media, leading both regions to trend on Twitter. Both Hamas and the IDF are tweeting from official accounts as well, with the former sharing news of rocket landings and Israeli casualties while the latter posts updates on its operations. Foreign Policy magazine has called the IDF's use of Twitter a breakthrough in military communications.
