Now hiring: Communications Fellow | Smart Growth America

Smart Growth America is hiring for a Communications Fellow to contribute to our website, online networks, and press efforts. This is an opportunity that features a great deal of responsibility, direct collaboration with our supporters, and valuable hands-on experience.

Position description
The ideal Communications Fellow is an excellent writer tapped in to news about politics and smart growth development, and who can turn that information into engaging content for our website, email lists and social media. Applicants should be dependable team players who can perform regular duties while also offering new ideas for how to make our work even better.

Responsibilities
The Communications Fellow?s primary responsibilities include:

  • Aggregating news about smart growth issues;
  • Posting our daily news clips;
  • Contributing to Smart Growth America?s social media presence;
  • Tracking social media and web analytics;
  • Writing original content for our blog;
  • Assisting with outreach to reporters and bloggers; and
  • Providing communications support for our coalition partners.

Requirements
Fellowship positions require a self-motivated, detail-oriented person with excellent writing, oral communication, and organizational skills and the ability to work independently with minimal supervision. Candidates should have a strong interest in smart growth, economic development, small business, transportation, community growth or related areas.

In addition, the Communications Fellow should have a basic understanding of HTML; proficiency using content management systems; solid understanding of social media for organizations; and interest in contributing to communications strategy. Knowledge of Photoshop and leading new media strategies are a definite plus.

Candidates should be highly computer literate with experience in web content, and the Microsoft Office suite of programs (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).

Compensation
Fellowship comes with a stipend of $1,500 per month. In addition, Fellows receive six days of paid sick leave or vacation and will have paid leave on all federal holidays that occur within the tenure at Smart Growth America.

Timeframe and Location
The position is full-time, 40 hours a week. Minimum commitment of six months required. This position is located at Smart Growth America?s offices in Washington, DC.
