GoPro Hero3 Black Edition

With the HD Hero2, GoPro established itself as the go-to name for action cameras. The GoPro Hero3 Black Edition ($399.99 direct) is an impressive upgrade for an already excellent product, slimming down the dimensions and adding features like 4K (or Ultra HD) video recording capability. There are some problems with the Wi-Fi implementation?namely issues with battery life?but the superb video quality, ease of use, and plentitude of mounting options keep the GoPro Hero3 Black Edition at the top of the pack. It's an easy pick for our Editors' Choice award for action cameras.

Design and Features
The Hero3 is basically a slimmed-down Hero2, measuring 1.6 by 2.3 by 0.8 inches (HWD) and 2.6 ounces versus 1.6 by 2.4 by 1.2 inches (HWD) and 3.3 ounces. You get the same silver cuboid design, with two control buttons, a monochrome LCD, and a wide-angle lens. Competitors, like the Sony Action Cam?or Drift Innovation HD Ghost, have more bullet-like designs, which make them more suitable for side-mounting on helmets and goggle straps.

All of the controls basically run through the two main buttons; one located on the front and one on top. The front button acts as a power toggle and mode selector; tapping it cycles through video recording, still capture, burst still capture, and the settings menu. The top button is used to start recording, grab a photo, and navigate through the menu system. It can be a bit cumbersome to dig into menus and settings, but that's been true of all GoPros. The two button setup, along with the LED indicators and loud audible beep, makes it easy to trigger recordings even when the camera is mounted on helmets.

?

Along the left edge are micro HDMI and mini USB ports, as well as a microSD card slot that supports cards up to 64GB. There are also two LED indicators on the face of the Hero3; a red one indicates recording status while a blue one indicates Wi-Fi status. On the right edge is a small Wi-Fi On/Off button, with three small drilled holes for the microphone above it. The back houses the battery compartment and another small red LED to indicate recording status.

There are a ton of accessories available for the Hero3, ranging from various mounts to attachable BacPacs that add things like an LCD screen. The Black Edition comes with the camera, a waterproof housing (submergible to 197 feet), a Wi-Fi remote, rechargeable battery, 3-way pivot arm, curved adhesive mount, flat adhesive mount, and a USB charging cable. The Wi-Fi remote is waterproof and lets you trigger recording wirelessly, but during testing we found it cumbersome to pair and a bit unnecessary unless you have a multi-camera shoot (the Wi-Fi remote can control up to 50 GoPros). On top of that, during testing, the Wi-Fi feature was a huge draw on battery life. You can set up an ad-hoc network between the Hero3 and a smartphone, and use the free iOS or Android app to control recording, use your smartphone as a viewfinder, and transfer files for uploading to the Web.

Video Quality and Conclusions
The GoPro Hero3 Black Edition is easily the most versatile action camera available. Where most cameras can do 720p60 and 1080p30, the Hero3 can also do 720p at 120 frames per second, 1080p60, and even 4K video at 15 frames per second. Sony's Action Cam recently added 1080p60 with a firmware update and the Drift HD Ghost tops out at 1080p30 and 720p60, but neither support 4K. ?

For testing, we sent the Hero3, Sony Action Cam, and Drift HD Ghost out with our photographer on his most recent ski trip. Video quality at 1080p60 on the Hero3 was excellent, with crisp details, true-to-life colors, and smooth frame rates. Even with challenging lighting conditions, the Hero3 captured video that was full of detail and low on image noise. The Sony Action Cam, on the other hand, was unable to match the Hero3 in clarity or crispness, with video that was noticeably grainier and lacked the same level of sharp details that the Hero3 captured. The Drift HD Ghost's video lies somewhere between the two, with sharp details and pleasantly saturated, if not completely accurate colors. More demanding video enthusiasts will also be thrilled with GoPro's inclusion of Protune firmware, which allows far greater control over color correction.

We also tested out the Hero3's 4K shooting mode, which you won't find in any other action camera, or even most high-end consumer camcorders for that matter. The footage is limited to 15 frames per second, making it pretty choppy, but you just won't be able to find this level of detail in any other competitor.

Still image quality is good, as long as you can live with the distortion introduced by such a wide angle lens. The Hero3 can shoot 12-, 7-, or 5-megapixel stills, and has a number of burst or time-lapse photo modes. Burst shooting can capture 30 shots in a second, while continuous shooting mode can capture 3, 5, or 10 photos per second. Time-lapse mode offers 0.5-, 1-, 2-, 5-, 10-, 30-, and 60-second intervals for shots. Images shot at 12MP are sharp and full of detail, but still no match for a good point-and-shoot with a zoom lens.

If you're looking for an action camera that can keep up with all of your extreme exploits, the GoPro Hero3 Black Edition should be at the top of your list. It's brimming with features and shooting modes, including the unrivaled ability to capture 4K video, and delivers some of the crispest video footage we've seen in the category. It's eminently easy to use and there's also a huge diversity of mounting options available. Our only gripe is the huge battery drain brought on by the built-in Wi-Fi, but you also don't ever have to use that feature. That said, the Hero3 Black Edition is packing enough goods to handily nab our Editors' Choice.?

Review: SPCO has a bittersweet homecoming, with music to match ...

Matthias Pintscher

It felt a lot like both hello and goodbye at St. Paul's Ordway Center on Friday night. The St. Paul Chamber Orchestra played the first post-lockout concert at its home hall after two weekends at Neighborhood Series venues, and the musicians received an enthusiastic ovation when they took the stage.

But some sadness crept in with the realization that some of the musicians are soon to retire or otherwise depart, reducing the SPCO to the size agreed to in its new contract. And it's doubtful that any farewell will sound as emotionally eloquent as the Pavane by Gabriel Faure or Sarabande by Claude Debussy that were performed Friday. Both were soaked in sadness, yet as beautiful as the Nocturne from Felix Mendelssohn's "A Midsummer Night's Dream" played between them.

Just when I was adjusting to the idea that this was going to be an evening of misty melancholy, along came the premiere of a new work by German composer Matthias Pintscher, who also conducted the program. His piece, "bereshit (In a Beginning)," proved a gripping, hypnotic and very contemporary take on the creation myth detailed in the Torah or Old Testament. Sounding much like the birth pangs of the earth, "bereshit" was full of stark intensity, evoking bubbles in the primordial soup before furious clusters of notes seemed to impose order upon the chaos.

It's a piece well worth hearing, and the musicians of the SPCO (with the assistance of several members of the locked-out Minnesota Orchestra) executed

it impeccably. No performer stood out more than Kyu-Young Kim, the SPCO principal second violinist who is soon to depart for the New York Philharmonic. He provided the chief channel for Pintscher's involving anxiety, his flurries of very high notes like an assertion of individuality amidst a swarm of anxious sounds.

As abstract and disquieting as the work was, the Ordway audience gave it a rousing ovation. The response was especially impressive, considering that the first half of the concert was all about enfolding the audience in a blanket of beauty, and Pintscher's piece was decidedly un-pretty. But his is a voice worth hearing, one worthy of the warm "hello" accorded it.

Khabib Nurmagomedov and Abel Trujilo scuffled at the UFC 160 weigh-ins, and Mike Tyson loved it

During the UFC 160 weigh-ins, Khabib Nurmagomedov blew weight, wore a wig, started a fight and made Mike Tyson laugh. He had a full day.

Nurmagomedov weighed in at 158.5 for his lightweight bout with Abel Trujilo. He will forfeit 20 percent of his purse, so maybe that's why he was angry when he faced off with Trujilo. He got in his opponent's face, first bumping Trujilo's head and then pushing him back. He was quickly escorted off stage by the UFC's Burt Watson.

The best part of the scuffle? Mike Tyson was on stage and loved every minute of it. Look in the upper right-hand corner of the video to see his reaction.

UK arrests 2 men over incident with Pakistan plane

LONDON (AP) ? Two men have been arrested on suspicion of endangerment of an aircraft after an incident on a plane flying from Pakistan to Britain, officials said, rattling the U.K. just days after a British soldier was killed on a London street in a suspected terror attack.

A fighter jet was launched to divert the Pakistan International Airlines plane carrying nearly 300 passengers to Britain's Stansted Airport on Friday. The plane, which took off from Lahore, Pakistan, was originally supposed to have landed in Manchester.

Essex Police said that two men have been arrested and removed from the plane, which landed safely and was on an isolated runway at Stansted Airport. Britain's Ministry of Defense confirmed that a Typhoon jet was scrambled to investigate an incident involving a civilian aircraft but declined to provide further details.

Chris Wiggan, a spokesman at Stansted Airport, said passengers were disembarking from the plane. "It is not an emergency evacuation," he said.

Pakistan International Airlines spokesman Mashood Tajwar said the airline had been unable to contact the pilot of the Flight P709 despite repeated attempts. He said 297 passengers and 11 crew members were on the diverted plane.

The incident comes as many police forces across Britain have stepped up patrols in recent days following a suspected terror attack in south London.

Two men with meat cleavers attacked and killed a British soldier in broad daylight, and gruesome footage that emerged after the attack showed one of the alleged assailants angrily complaining about the British government and troops in foreign lands.

Those two suspects were shot when police arrived on the scene and have been hospitalized.

Good value, or no? Seven ways wholesale clubs make you spend more.

Wholesale clubs like Sam's Club and Costco are touted as moneysavers, but they have ways of making shoppers leave with more than they planned.?

By Aaron Crowe,?Contributor / May 25, 2013

Shoppers push their carts at the Costco store in Nashua, N.H. Costco and other wholesalers have methods to encourage spending, Crowe says, including merchandise placement and customized deals.

Unless I leave my wallet at home, I can never make a trip to Costco without spending $100. It's simply not possible. I may go there with a shopping list and be determined to stick to it, but every time I leave with more goods than I expected to buy.

What pull does Costco have over my wallet and how do wholesale warehouse clubs get shoppers to spend more than they've planned to? We uncovered a few factors that make up the allure of wholesale pricing ? make yourself aware of them, and maybe you'll avoid buying more than you need.

Alluring Low Prices Add Up

People shop in bulk to save money, but low prices aren't the only way wholesale or warehouse stores entice shoppers to spend. Costco makes most of its money from annual membership fees, which help it maintain its low prices. Those low prices in turn make customers feel like they're getting a good deal upon just walking in the door; but lots of low prices add up and customers end up buying just a little bit more than they immediately need, says psychotherapist Judy Belmont. "It's unbelievable how low some of those prices are," Belmont says. "So people do end up spending a lot more."

Shop at Your Own Pace

It probably hasn't occurred to many shoppers that there's no music playing in the background at many wholesale clubs. "They want you in that store forever," behavioral and marketing psychologist Elliott Jaffa says. There's no fast music to make you shop faster or slow music to encourage you to meander through the store." It's as if time becomes suspended in the endless aisles.

Large Quantities and Sizes Can Disguise Unit Prices

If bigger is better, then buying more of something bigger comes at that much more of a savings, or at least perceived of savings. The sizes and quantities of bulk products are not what people are used to, Jaffa says, so a 4-pack of 32-oz. bottles of ketchup looks like a deal worth buying. Never mind that you may never use all of that ketchup before it goes bad. You have to look at the unit prices ? sometimes marked, sometimes not ? and compare it to other stores' unit prices to figure out if you are truly getting a good deal. "I've got to believe [Costco] has some of the best psychologists in the country working for them," he says, "because it has the best suppliers and know how to price everything."

Product Placement Is Everything

Whether it's a warehouse club or a grocery store, product placement is key to getting shoppers to buy, says Rob Jager, a business and management consultant who has worked for numerous big-box retailers. Cameras, computers, and other electronics don't provide a large profit margin for stores. To compensate, they position these items at the front of the store so that they at least see a lot of turnover.

The ends of aisles, or "end caps" as they're known, are prominent spaces that suppliers often pay for. Signage may make you think end cap products are great deals, but check twice before loading them into your cart. "I think shoppers have been trained to believe [end caps are] where the deals are," he says. But it might just be that that's where the ad dollars are going.

Shopping at Costco Is Like Being on a Treasure Hunt

Since stores like Sam's Club, Costco, and BJ's Wholesale Club change out their merchandise often, you never know if what you see on sale today will be there tomorrow. Finding new things in a warehouse club is an on-going treasure hunt and gives shoppers a sense of intrigue when they walk in.

Marketing expert Harry Beckwith, who has Costco as a client, says that his best friend can't go to Costco without recounting the incredible deals he got there. This friend is wealthy but shops at Costco because it makes him feel clever and smart. It turns shopping ? something he normally dislikes ? into a game he loves.

Getting Into and Out of Costco Alive Is a Feat

Face it, walking through a huge store can be a hassle. The parking lot is usually packed, the store is full of people pushing huge carts that are difficult to maneuver, and checkout lines are sometimes endless. It's not an easy trip, so once there, many customers find it smart to make best of it and buy as much as they need in order to avoid making another trip any time soon.

Cashing in on Customized Deals

Sam's Club, for one, gets members to buy more by tracking their prior purchasing patterns and offering customized deals, says Bruce D. Sanders, a consumer psychologist and retailing consultant. The Sam's Club program, which requires an extra annual fee, uses predictive analytics to determine what items are attractive to individual customers, and then offers discounts on those items. Consumers also receive discounts on items they've never bought before, but that which are logical future purchases based on a consumer's history. This "endowment effect" encourages shoppers to buy more because they've paid for the privilege to get rewards and are motivated to cash in on such programs, Sanders said.

If you're aware of the ways in which wholesale clubs tempt the everyday shopper, you may be able to save even more money. By sticking to a list, allotting yourself a set amount of time, and only carrying cash, you can avoid the temptations that these stores present.
